Alytus is one of the greenest cities in Lithuania where 30 percent of its territory are green areas surrounded by a 16 km loop of the Nemunas River. Alytus titled as the capital of Dzûkija was first mentioned in the written sources in 1377 and obtained the rights of a city in 1581. The Alytus region takes pride in its rich cultural heritage and picturesque landscape: swift rivers, clear lakes full of fish and the green forests suitable both for leisure and travel. Here one can find more than 600 monuments of nature, archaeology, history, art, architecture and urbanism.

PLACES OF INTEREST
ARCHITECTURAL MONUMENTS:
• St Louis Church – the oldest church in Alytus that was rebuilt in 1818.
• Pivašiūnai St. Virgin Mary Ascension Church is the only classicistic church in Lithuania and has preserved the structure of a Latin cross with typical dynamic of an elongated volume and crosspiece. There is a miraculous Picture of the Mother of God on the great altar, which is comparable to the Madonna of the Auðra Gate with its age, painting and miraculous healing power.
• Simnas St. Virgin Mary Ascension Church was built in 1520. It is the only basilica of the Renaissance period build in a shape of a cross.
• The wooden Raiþiai Mosque built in 1889 is the only one that was active during the Soviet regime. 
• Simonas Konarskis, the participant of the rebellion of 1831, was born in 1808 in the Dapkiðkiai Manor. Today, it is a village and tourism estate.
