Biržai is a place, where the honourable history of the country is remembered by the remaining cultural values, where the surface of land undergoes active formation and continuously changes the landscape, here and there the ground falls in and the sink holes appear. It is a place, where from the earliest times people knew how to use mineral resources for healing purposes. It is a place, where everyone will be astonished by the originality of the land and the cultural events. LANDMARKS • Astravas manor homestead. • A church of St. John the Baptist was built in 1857–1861 at the cost of the count Jonas Tiškevičius (Tyszkiewicz), supposedly, according to the project of the student of Vilnius University Tomas Tišeckis. Architect Laurynas Cezaris Anikinis. • The neogothic Evangelic Reformed Church was built in 1874, according to the project of the architect from Riga H. Šelas reminding the Radvilas, who supported and spread this religion. • Lake Širvėna was formed in 1575, by damming up Apaščia and Agluona Rivers at their confluence. This is the oldest artificial lake in Lithuania. The occurrence of the lake is linked to the construction of the defensive fortified castle of Biržai. A 525-meter long pedestrian bridge over Lake Širvėna (Jaunimo str., Biržai) links Biržai and Astravas. • A sinkhole “Cow’s cave“,
3,5 km (Karajimiškis village, Biržai region). • Likėnai, Smardonė spring, 8 km. For many years the cosy, quiet location rich in sulphate mineral water and sulphurous mud was identified as a resort. Supposedly, the water of Smardonė spring was used for curing in XVI century already. Presently, a rehabilitation hospital is situated in Likėnai, where heart, joints, neural diseases are treated, and the shady park around it allures many passing by. • Kirkilai lakes, 8 km (Kirkilai
village, Biržai region) • Dolomite exposures on the bank of Nemunėlis River: „Tabokinės“, „Muoriškių“ and „Velniapilio olos“. • Wooden chapels: Ančiškiai, Deikiškiai, Jasiuliškiai, Kupriai, Šukioniai, Geidžiūnai, Lebeniškiai, Lamokėliai, Diliai, Kupreliškis, Kvetkai villages. • Klausučiai mound is situated in
the territory of Selonian tribes. • Rinkuškiai-Juodeliai mound, called a Devil’s hill. Its meaning has not been fully explored. It could serve as a location of a religious cult, also called ancient sacred place. ENTERTAINMENT • Educational entertainment program
