The municipality of Vilkaviškis
distric is in southwest part of Lithuania. It neighbors with Poland in the South and
Kaliningrad distric of Russian Federation in the West.
Vilkaviškis – one of the oldest Sudovia cities which is mentioned even
in XVI century. It had received the rights of the city in 1660. Since 1773 Vilkaviškis
estate was mentioned too. This is the palace where Napoleonas Bonapartas was
stopped to stay. Vilkaviškis during the period of printing prohibition had become one of
the most important place of the shipping and distribution of Lithuanian publications.
Famous people of Lithuania had learned in Vilkaviškis “Žiburio” gymnasium:
Kazys Bradūnas, Salomėja Nėris, Antanas Vaičiulaitis.

OBJECTS OF COGNITIVE TOURISM IN
VILKAVIŠKIS DISTRICT
• Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s Visit
Steponas Pacas had built the first church in Vilkaviškis city in 1620. Masonry church of
the Blessed Virgin Mary’s Visit had arised in 1884. During World War II the church was
wasted and was fully demolished in 1954. In 1994 a new temple was set which was
ceremonially consecrated by Bishop Juozas Žemaitis in 1998.
• Paežeriai mansion-house

Since XVIII century well-known Paežeriai estate had been established in several stages:
mansion-house, tower, economy buildings and the park were projected and built in different
time. Impressive mansion-house was built in 1795–1799. This stylish palace of two
storeys is the combination of classicism and baroque styles. This is best persistent part
of estate comples with front part having 4 columns and ornate interior. Currently cultural
centre of Sudovia is established. The most interesting focus of Paežeriai estate is an
oficina of romanticism style built in the beginning of XIX century. This is a building of
one storey with two columns. Magnificent tower burrows to it and the building include the
museum of Vilkaviškis land.
• Jonas Basanavičius homestead-museum

Jonas Basanavičius (1851–1927) – the father of Lithuanian national revival, the
character of culture and society. The musem in his homestead was established in 1989.
There you can familiarize with the life of the signatory of Independence act. Ouklet part
is flaunting near the homestead. This park was started to appoint in 1988 and it memorizes
the Heros of national revival. The area of 40 hectares includes 8 400 verdant saplings.
• The Mound of the Mounds – one of the most beautiful mounds in
Sudovia land. This is former village and a castle with a counter-castle of V-XII century.
Supposedly, the castle of duke Margiris was there. Visiting path and resort were appointed
in order to protect the mound against negative influence of the tourists.
• Kunigiškiai and Dabravolė mounds
Pajevonis (Kunigiškiai) mound including antique village is incorporated into the register
of immovable cultural valuables of republican meaning. While driving from Pajevonis to Vištytis
you can see overlooking Dabravolė mound having multi-trunk linden on its foot. This
linden is spread into 31 trunks.
• Vision place “Svirkalnis“ near Gražiškiai. This is the highest
hill of the parish having a small lake on its foot.
• Larch forest of 150 years old is located at the marging with Poland.
Also there leisure yard is appointed.

• Vištytis regional park

It was established in 1992. The purpose of it is to preserve the landscape, natural
ecosystem of Sudovia’s cordillera and valuables of culture heritage.
• Vištytis stone – one of the largest boulders in Lithuania, also
called Pėduotasis. The height of the boulder is 4 m, the width – 5 m. This stone was
announced as geological monument of the nature.
• Vištytis Lake – one of the best-known lakes in Lithuania where many
residents of Lithuania come to have rest. This is the largest and cleanest Sudovia Lake
surrounded by many bays and peninsulas. A part of it also falls on Kaliningrad district.
Vištytis town includes the remaining till now church built in 1829 from red bricks,
oil-mill and windmill. The past is mentioned by Pavištytis and Vištytis mounds. Two
pedestrian paths are appointed in the park – the Minor and the Great. Both of them
familiarize us with picturesque Šilelis forest and wonderful landscape formed in it.
LEISURE TIME
• Water tourism route with canoes down Šešupė River. This is the
largest and cleanest river of Sudovia land flowing through three countries: Poland,
Lithuania and Russia. It is possible to swim from Liubavas to Kudirkos Naumiestis.
