Kalvarija municipality is in South-West Lithuania. It bounds with
Poland Republic in the South, Vilkaviškis region in the West, Marijampolė municipality in the North and Lazdijai region in the
East. 12 kilometers separate Kalvarija from to the transition station of Lithuania–Poland border. International highway “Via
Baltica” (Helsinki–Warsaw) and important railway line Kaunas–Šeštokai–
Suvalkai passes through Kalvarija. Also good roads connect it with Lazdijai, Alytus and picturesque surroundings of Vištytis lake.
MUSEUMS
• Kalvarijos region ethnographical museum. It was established in 1963 (in Kalvarijos gymnasium
accommodations). Valuable data about Kalvarijos region, its history and figures are collected in this

• Regional museum in Akmenynai basic school. The museum was established in 1988. The main fund of the museum is 940 exhibits,
subsidiary fund – 420 exhibits. There valuable regional material is collected. It includes the existence of the school and surrounding
villages.

• Ethnographical museum in Sangrūda secondary school. It was established in 1960. Collected material involves information about
the partisans of Sangrūda surroundings, expatriates, book-distributors,
archeological, natural memorials and past villages.

PLACES TO VISIT
• Kalvarija city historical part is an urban object protected by nation.
It was formed during XVII–XX ages. The old town had got recent view in XIX age and was ordered according the plan that was
prepared in 1892. Street network of historical part of the city is harmoniously
related with a little bit hilly and rugged country. There is a complicated form square at the crossing of five main streets. In
the centre of Urbanism Style dominate one to three floor wooden and masonry houses that were build in the beginning of XIX and
XX ages.
• Evangelical-Lutheran Church reminds short period (1795–1807) when Kalvarija together with left part of Nemunas belonged
to Prussia and people of this belief had migrated here.
• Synagogues complex in Kalvarija city. The complex of Synagogues and Talmud schools separate by their originality. It is composed of baroque (summery) and eclectic (wintry) Synagogues and
Talmud school-rabbi house. Baroques Synagogues of the end of XVIII age are one of the most valuable synagogues in Lithuania. Initial
structure, forms and “Aron kodešas” – a bookcase for storage of torus, remain the same. Restoration works were performed in
2003–2004. This is the only one complex of three buildings remained till today. It has a formation history of 200 years. Now this complex
belongs to Lithuania Jewish Community.
• Horse post station in Kalvarija station was build in 1825 and since it was one of the stations of horses exchange and postmen
resting, sleeping and feeding place near the post line of Peterburg– Kaunas–Suvalkai–Warsaw. Existing station building complex in Darius
and Girėnas street has the same administrative building, lodging-house and a pub.
• Kalvarija Holy Virgin Mary’s Church was built in 1838–1840 and consecrated in 1843. This masonry church is of Romanticism-Historicism period. The forms that are appropriate to classicism dominate
there. In 1902 the church was broaden and side naves and towers were built on. In 1948 the church was repaired one more
time. Six valuable pictures of XIX age are guarded there.
• Kampiniai mound is near international highway “Via Baltica“. The mound is excellent place to review the surroundings.
• Papiliakalniai mound. In the northern part of the site a trench was excavated in 1944. In the eastern part of the site a monument
was build in 1944 and dedicated for German soldiers memory of 131 infantry division 432 regiment that were perished in October.
The mound is overgrown with pines.
• Kačergos mountain (the height is 225 m) overlooks in Lithuania–Poland frontier. At hand there is a review tower where a beautiful
landscape of Lithuania and Poland opens.
• Deivoniškės chapel with the cross. The springlet flows alongside. Even in XIX age this place was considered to be sainted. Miraculous
recuperations for people visiting this place were stated here.
• Kalvarija culture and relaxation park. This park is mentioned already
in 1891 as Royal garden that is formed as relaxation and recreation zone in the south-west part of the city, to the west from the
road to Suvalkai and near the bridge of Šešupė river. In 1935 the monument was built for Lithuanian Mother which was demolished
during the occupation years. It was rebuilt in 1989.
LEISURE TIME
• Orija, Jurgežeriai water fields and Šešupė river’s dam along Kalvarija
had become the attraction center of relaxation tourism. During hot summer days residents and guests of the city are attracted
by the resort at Kalvarija margin. There are Šešupė dam, falling water, relaxation park, beach and playgrounds. At the resort near
Orija lake the places are ordered for swimming and water bicycle rent. They are offered for holidaymakers. The lake is at the left side
of Kalvarija–Suvalkai road.
• Summer relaxation camp “Gintaras” is established in Jurgežeriai
pinewood near Jurgežeriai pond. The pond is at the right side of Kalvarija–Vištytis road.
